Résumé

récupéré en direct d'OpenAlex

Participation in leisure is key to the physical and mental health of all children, however, engagement is low when compared to children with disabilities.Lack of information about existing programs and lack of supports in accessing and engaging in these programs are barriers to participation.A social support network can help bridge the gap to maximize access to information about leisure opportunities and become key vehicles for health promotion. This study explored the characteristics and the potential benefits of an online community of support for parents, aimed at enhancing participation in leisure. The study used qualitative methods with interpretative descriptive analysis.Participants included a convenience sample of parents of children with disabilities of various ages and diagnoses living in Montreal who were members of the Jooay App.The online moderated group was created on a social networking site.Participants received weekly prompts over 3 months.Data points included individual interviews at the end of the intervention and the online community transcripts.Themes were generated addressing participants' experiences and perspectives.Initial coding was conducted by two researchers, and agreement with the research team.Eight main themes described the participants' perspectives about the perceived benefits of a community of support and their parental experiences in promoting participation in leisure for their child.Themes were: barriers to participation; benefits of online information sharing; benefits of engaging in an online community on leisure; social support needs and mentorship; information needs and instrumental support; community of support for youth with disabilities; undesirable effects of online communities; suggestions for the development of the Jooay community.Within these themes, participants described the importance of parent expertise and relatedness in supporting their quest for information. They identified shared common barriers in participating in leisure such as time, accessibility, inclusion in mainstream activities and costs. The online community allowed parents to be a mentor to others by sharing thoughts and experiences, voicing frustrations about leisure participation, and increasing their knowledge on available activities and programs for their children. They also described potential risks of engaging in the online space such as lack of privacy and excessive exposure to information.Parents were not ready to allow their children to engage in similar online spaces, but expressed that there is a need for such supports for youth.
