Selective Sustainability: The infl uence of targeted marketing for housing on the emergence of a sustainability class in Montreal
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
"Sustainability has become a topic that pervades the collective consciousness because of the increased knowledge of and importance attributed to concepts like climate change in recent years. Understandings of the topic vary, with much emphasis given to environmental sustainability, but a widening interest in expanding the reach of the concept to social and financial issues as well. This expansion provides an important bridge that connects the concept directly to humans, further establishing its importance in common discourse. However, the unfortunate reality of the world and its inequalities is that some individuals are afforded greater opportunity to be concerned and take action in the name of sustainability. Through various forms of power, including financial capital, these individuals help shape and control the way in which the world responds to sustainability issues. Others without this power often are left to worry about other issues that have a greater effect on their daily lives. This disparity has led to a wave of commodifi cation of sustainable practices, where individuals who have the money to live sustainably, can choose to do so (Gould and Lewis, 2016, 2018) Hidden consequences abound in this type of system. Not only does the commodifi cation of sustainability allow for cooptation of its principles by those looking to gain capital, but this also opens the door for false promises of sustainability. The concept’s popularity places it in fashion, becoming part of an individual’s brand and blinding consumers to the actual impacts associated with their actions (Gould & Lewis, 2021). Luxury and sustainability are antithetical to each other, but are able to coexist in a world where the consumer does not actually care what their impact is because they are privileged enough to avoid the negative impacts if need be. This emerging elite constitutes the “sustainability class”, “conscious” consumers who, although with good intentions, fail to see the hypocrisy of their own actions (Gould and Lewis, 2016, 2018). Urbanized areas are ripe for the growth of this class as they attract young and wealthy people concerned with sustainability. Developers can use this attraction to lure these individuals with selective narrative building and use them for financial gain, both immediately and by perpetuating the growth machine for future extraction of capital (Logan & Molotch, 2007). Understanding the role of urban developers in this system and their ability to harness the concept of sustainability for their own benefit can provide a valuable resource for how to regulate this type of development and create a truly sustainable system.
