Silicate dynamics in common hardwoods of southern Quebec with a focus on its role on Al and Mn toxicity
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
In acidic soils, aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn) availability can be high and have a negative effect on plant growth and nutrition. Silicon (Si) has been studied for its ability to alleviate Al and Mn toxicity in agricultural crops. Despite its importance, only a few studies have examined Si uptake and interactions in trees. In this study, I first investigated Si, Al, Mn and Calcium (Ca) accumulation in leaves of sugar maple and American beech over a five-month period. Si uptake was found to be continuous for both species before reaching a plateau (Si concentration > 1%) at the end of the growing season. Si uptake is likely associated with the sum of evapotranspiration in sugar maple and American beech (r = 0.991 for A. beech and 0.998 for sugar maple). Both species can therefore be considered passive accumulators of Si. In the second part of the study, sugar and silver maple were grown with different concentrations of Al and Mn in hydroponic systems with and without Si. Most of the effects observed were restricted to the root system. The negative Al effect was less pronounced for root dry weight and length of silver maple with the addition of Si with a concentration of AlCl3 between 100-2,000 uM and Na2SiO3 of 2,000 uM. As for sugar maple, root dry weight increased with the addition of Si suggesting that Al toxicity was not achieved for sugar maple and that it is better adapted to high Al availability than silver maple. Finally, I investigated the capacity of different species to accumulate Si and assessed the species interaction on Si uptake in a young plantation on the Macdonald Campus. Leaves of 16 tree species were analyzed for their Si content. On average, leaf Si concentration was almost six times higher in hardwoods (6.01±0.34 mg g-1) than in conifers (0.98±0.36 mg g-1), and sugar maple had the highest leaf Si concentration amongst maples (9.86 mg g-1). When grown in mixed plantations, sugar maple had a higher leaf Si concentration than in the monoculture, the likely result of reduced Si uptake by the companion species that are Si excluders (Si < 1 %).
