The purpose of the tests is to examine the ability of a\nsimple laboratory procedure to accurately predict the survival of a\nmicroorganism in the field. Philom\nBios Takes Over Marketing Role Philom Bios Inc. of Saskatoon has\nassumed all responsibility for the marketing of Provide, N-prove, and\nTandem, its biological products line. The marketing of these products\nwas previously handled by DowElanco Canada Inc. Flax Council Funds\nResearch Canadian flax growers could reap the benefits from results of\na three-year project looking at simple changes in management practices\nto improve production. The Flax Council of Canada is providing the\nprimary funds for a Matching Investment Initiative project at the\nAgriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Brandon Research Centre that\ncould lead to increases in flax yield through improvements in\nfertilizer management and weed control. Ginseng Cloning Opens Door to\nCrop Improvement New Developments in Animal Biotech Scientists at the\nDairy and Swine Research Centre at Lennoxville, Quebec are using a new\nprocess called microsatellite technology to mark genes responsible for\ndesirable traits such as growth rate and carcass quality. Transgenic\nPapaya Two lines of genetically-engineered papaya that are resistant to\npapaya ringspot virus (PRSV) have been introduced by Cornell University\nand the University of Hawaii. New Fermentation Facility at N.C. State\nN.C. State University (NCSU) has set up a new $270,000 fermentation\nfacility, complete with a 150-liter industrial fermenter, that will\nenable scientists to produce large amounts of biological substances\nneeded to advance several biotech projects. Brewing and Biotechnology\nAustralian scientists have identified genes in barley which can control\nqualities of beer such as haziness. The scientists have identified\ngenes that prevent barley from making tannins, the major cause of haze,\nand have improved a gene transfer mechanism into barley. Regulatory\nEnvironment Canada at Odds with Status Quo According to an article by\nJim Romahn in Manitoba Cooperator, Environment Canada and its Minister\nSergio Marchi are refusing to go along with the federal cabinet, which\nsupports the status quo with regard to regulating products of\nbiotechnology. New Cost Recovery Fees Detailed New fees covering\nproduct registrations, product approvals, and other regulatory services\nprovided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) to feed and\nfertilizer manufacturers are in effect.
