Nutrient Management Practices for the Optimization of Organic Milling Oat (Avena sativa)
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Milling oat (Avena sativa L.) is a staple crop in the Canadian organic sector. With seeded oat acreage expanding yearly, sustainable soil fertility management is vital to ensure crop demand is met. Constraints with current permitted organic and inorganic-based P inputs often lead to P-deficient soils in organic systems. This study aims to optimize the growth and yield of organic milling oat by evaluating the effects of various organic and inorganic nutrient inputs and their cultural management practices. Crop rotations utilizing legume green manures and animal manures can supply crop nutrient needs and maintain soil health in organic systems. Four two-year crop sequence trials conducted near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (SK) evaluated the residual effects of preceding crop type, animal manure source, and its application timing on subsequent organic oat yields. Preceding crops consisted of fababean (Vicia faba L.) for seed, fababean green manure, fallow, and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Fall applications of composted cattle manure and fresh laying hen manure were applied at rates of 14 and 8 tonnes of manure ha-1, respectively, averaged across all sites. Manure was applied prior to the preceding crop or prior to the oat crop and included an untreated control. Fallow and the green manure resulted in comparable subsequent oat grain and biomass yields that were higher than those following fababean for seed and wheat crops. Integrating animal manure applications with a preceding crop did not increase subsequent oat yields compared to their corresponding untreated controls. Overall, the preceding crop type alone had the greatest impact on oat yield, highlighting the potential of fababean as a productive green manure crop. Struvite is a wastewater-recycled P mineral that is currently being explored as a potential slow-release inorganic P fertilizer alternative. Field studies compared the growth and yield of oat fertilized with struvite and monoammonium phosphate (MAP) at four sites: three in SK with soil test P ranging from sufficient to deficient, and one in Manitoba (MB) with very low soil test P. Struvite and MAP were applied at 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 kg of equivalent P ha-1. Increasing P rates led to linear increases in early vegetative crop responses, regardless of fertilizer source at three of the four sites. Early season crop responses did not lead to yield responses at these sites. Physiological mature crop and grain yield responses to struvite only occurred at MB. These results showed that struvite can be an effective P fertilizer for oats, especially under P-deficient conditions. These studies demonstrated how sustainable inputs and management practices can effectively address yield gaps in organic oat production across diverse conditions. Simultaneously, they highlight the significance of maintaining soil fertility for future crop production in the western Canadian prairies.
