Roll force prediction in hot strip rolling mill using machine learning techniques
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The goal of this research was to develop a roll force prediction model in the Algoma Steel Inc. hot strip rolling mill. The existing Algoma model exhibited deficiencies at certain rolling passes. Thus, a model with higher accuracy and stability is desired. A recently developed metallurgy-based spreadsheet microstructural model at McGill was calibrated for the Algoma mill using data from rolling logs. It was found that the values of the fitting parameters did not correspond to the metallurgical principles used in this model and, in fact, parameters had to be varied from pass to pass to obtain acceptable predictions. More importantly, the roll force predictions of the calibrated model could not outperform the existing Algoma mill model. Genetic algorithms were applied to search for the optimal combination of the fitting parameters, but little improvement was found. The physics-based mill model showed prediction instability in the first and last finishing passes and was unable to accurately accommodate changes in steel grade. It was then decided to create a model solely based on neural networks (NN), which is the core of this thesis. The proposed NN model considers alloying elements, physical processing parameters and rolling history as the input features. By assigning individual NN to each rolling stand with pass-specific features as input, a considerable improvement over the two other models was shown. The effect of rolling history, which is one of the main principles of the microstructural model, was found best represented by including all of the process parameters of previous stands and yielded a better performance in the final passes. Feature selection was also performed to examine the importance of input features at each mill stand. It was found that the steel chemistry has more impact in the early to middle passes, while some specific features of the rolling history have a dominating effect on roll force in the final pass, with very little influence of the chemistry.
