A shyrdak is more than an ornate felt carpet, not only is it a reminder of a Central Asian nomadic past and an integral part of cultural heritage but it can also hold a place of pride in a Kyrgyz household. Knowledge, skills, diversity, the semantics of ornamentation, and the ceremonies involved in making a shyrdak are all important aspects of ethnic-Kyrgyz material culture. Shyrdaks can therefore provide Kyrgyz women with a symbol of identity and a connection to their nomadic ancestors. The labour intensive making of shyrdaks is an act of feminist solidarity, communal unity that can foster the transmission of traditional knowledge from one generation to another. Representing the symbolism embedded in the meticulous preparation of shyrdak, the eighteen narratives included in this book demonstrate how community based tourism (CBT) can bring women together in a circle of sisterhood with the aim of empowering them, preserving their cultural heritage and securing their economic well-being. From the spirited Rahima in the plains of Song-Kul lake with her zest for life, to the zen-like Luiza and the peaceful atmosphere that surrounded her in the forest of Arslanbob, and Zhanyl on the shores of Issyk-Kul with a twinkle in her eyes and a reassuring and determined posture, I am in awe of the strength and resourcefulness of the women entrepreneurs of Kyrgyzstan working in the CBT sector. I am humbled that you chose to share a part of your life with us. The stories that we narrate in this book recognise, value, voice and celebrate your presence and your contribution to your families and to the development of Kyrgyzstan's economy, tourism sector and society.
