A.(gemon Sydney SuCCivan ^AzuardsFor half a century, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation has worked to perpetuate qualities reflected in the life of the nineteenth century New Yorker after whom the foundation was named.Lawyer, devout Christian, mediator, orator, philanthropist, and family man, Algernon Sydney Sullivan, in the words of a friend, "reached out both hands in constant helpfulness to men."And many were touched by him -from street beggars and Sunday School children to the most powerful businessmen and politicians of the city.With all of them, he commanded affection and respect.In 1890, three years after his death, a memorial committee (including former President Grover Cleveland among its 77 mem bers) was established.Its members charged themselves with keeping alive the exemplary traits of Mr. Sullivan.When their ranks began to thin, in the late I920's, they passed along the task to the New York Southern Society, of which Sullivan had been the first president.Each year the society's Algernon Sydney Sullivan awards were given to deserving students and out standing citizens at colleges and universities in the South.Since 1934, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation has continued to help both students and worthy institutions.Mr. Sullivan's son, George, never married, and the Sullivans left no direct descendants.Nonetheless, there have been heirs -three generations of scholarship and award recipients across the South.Through them Algernon Sydney Sullivan and his wife.Mary Mildred, still live and still influence the lives of others.Ms. Hughes is a Biochemistry major with a 3.96 G.P.A.She plans to attend medical school in the fall of 2003, and has already accom plished much in the sciences.This past summer, she participated in a prestigious summer research program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico.Last year, she worked for the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center as a scribe, providing cler ical assistance to physicians and stalf in the emergency room.She has also participated fully in the Pre-Medical/Allied Health Honor Society in the Department of Biological Sciences and is currently the Vice President for this Society.She has worked for Life Links, tutoring students in English, Spanish, Biology, Statistics and Religion.Ms. Hughes has played for Campbell's Women's Tennis team since 1999 and is currently the team captain.She is also currently on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.From 2000 to 2002, she was a Tennis Camp instructor Her honors and awards are numerous; President's List (1999-2002), Presidential Scholar (1999-2003), Who's Who Among Students in American Universities (2002), Phi Kappa Phi.Phi Eta Sigma, Campbell's Team GPA Award (2001, 2002), TAAC All-Academic (2000.2001, 2002), Campbell's Athletic Presidential Award (2000, 2001, 2002), Coach's Award (2001), tennis team captain (2002-2003), Vice President of Pre-Medical Honor Society (2002-2003), and was the recipient of the Mr and Mrs. James Nisbet Tennis Scholarship (2001-2003).Ms. Hughes' outreach to the community surrounding Campbell has also been extensive, including some 50 hours of community serv ice to Harnett Manor and Buies Creek Elementary School.Mr. Grabarek was drafted into the U.S. Army as a private during World War II and saw action with the 78th lnfantr>' Division in the European Theater At his dischai^e, he had attained the rank of Captain, was the holder of three Battle Stars and a Bronze Star dec oration.Mr. Grabarek has a lengthy list of community service involvement, making it impossible to measure the positive impact on the lives that he has touched through his service.Mr Grabarek is a practicing Certified Public Accountant in Durham.He was a city councilman and served four terms as mayor of the City of Durham.He was a longtime member of the Research Triangle Park Planning Commission, the Durham County Board of Health, the Board of Trustees of Watts Hospital, and the Durham Junior Chamber of Commerce where he served as President.Mr. Grabarek also served as president of the Durham Kiwanis Club where he is still a member, as director of the Durham Chamber of Commerce, and as a director of the North Carolina League of Municipalities.He is a former treasurer of the Durham County March of Dimes and past chairman of the Durham County Cancer Crusade.Most impor tantly, Mr Grabarek's services are all grounded by a strong religious faith.He has been a longtime member of the Watt's Street Baptist Church where he has served as a Sunday School teacher choir member, chairman of the Finance Committee, and as a member of the Board of Deacons.He is also the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including Father of the Year by the Durham Merchants Association, Kiwanian of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Durham, and the Distinguished Alumni Award by Benjamin Franklin University, now part of George Washington University.At Campbell, Mr. Grabarek serves on the Presidential Board of Advisors and has been a major force behind many of the University's capital campaigns.He also received the Presidential Medallion for meritori ous service, one of the highest honors the University bestows.
