Effect of electrolyte flow on the corrosion behaviour of AZ31B alloy for use in the automotive industry
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Magnesium (Mg) alloys are critical structural metals to the automotive industry due to their low density and high strength-to-weight ratio. The qualities employed in automobile components reduce fuel consumption and consequently, environmental pollution due to decreased greenhouse gas emissions. However, the alloys' poor corrosion resistance limits their application, specifically upon exposure to harsh service environments.Current strategies for the corrosion mitigation in Mg alloys can be synthesized into two methods: (i) corrosion protection, often achieved by the addition of inhibitors or in the form of protective coatings and (ii) corrosion prevention, typically achieved by alloying or improving the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys through a change in their chemical composition and phase constituents. However, the fast and efficient development of Mgbased alloys remains limited by the lack of a complete understanding of Mg alloy corrosion mechanisms and overall behaviour in all real service environments and particularly by the difficulties associated with emulating such variable environments. The focus of this thesis was to investigate the influence of electrolyte flow on the corrosion behaviour of AZ31B Mg alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution by using a rotating disc electrode (RDE).Interfacial processes such as charge transfer, diffusion and adsorption of corrosion species were discerned qualitatively by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).In addition to EIS, the corrosion kinetics was also studied by linear polarization. The topography/morphology/chemical composition and crystalline structure of the surface was characterized by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), surface roughness analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The rotation of the RDE generates fluid flow which removes dissolved Mg 2+ from the AZ31B surface surrounding thereby reducing the precipitation of the corrosion oxide layer, Mg(OH)2, which can partially protect the surface form further corrosion. Thus, increasing the RPM causes a sharp decrease in the corrosion resistance of AZ31B due to the formation of a progressively less-protective Mg(OH)2 film and then reaches a plateau at approximately 2500 iii RPM.Surface characterization indicated that the non-uniform degradation of the alloy surface was dominated by filiform corrosion and an eventual lateral growth of stable pits at higher rotations.Conclusively, it is evident that the construction of wheel rims from AZ31B will result in severe deterioration upon exposure to the alkali conditions of city streets often treated with chemical de-icing methods after heavy snowfall.
