Risk and resilience in alcoholic families: family functioning, sibling attachment, and parent-child relationships

Two studies were conducted to examine risk and resilience processes in alcoholic families; namely, family functioning, sibling attachment, and parent-child relationships. In study one, a sample of 1, 639 Canadian parents (mothers and fathers), with a child under the age of six-years-old, completed questionnaires. The results indicated that approximately 5% of Canadian families strongly agreed that drinking was a source of tension in the family. As a group, these families reported higher levels of parental depressive symptomatology, unhealthy family functioning, and punitive parenting compared to families without alcohol problems. Regression analysis revealed that parental depressive symptomatology, alcohol problems, punitive parenting behaviours, and the absence of a sibling predicted unhealthy family functioning, together accounting for 34% of the variance. The strongest predictors were depressive symptomatology and alcohol problems, which accounted for 15% and 7% of the variance respectively. Study Two further explored links between family functioning, sibling attachment, parent-child relationships and resiliency among adult children of alcoholics. Findings are presented from a community sample of in-depth interviews with 29 non-alcoholic, resilient adult children of alcoholic fathers. Thematic content analyses confirmed that family environment and interactions were often violent, unpredictable, and lacking open communication. Unprecedented findings were that relationships with non-alcoholic mothers were simultaneously characterized by emotional closeness and maternal neglect. In turn, participants reported compulsive caregiving towards non-alcoholic mothers, which was mediated by difficult emotions such as anger, loss, and disappointment. Despite normative conflict, older siblings frequently adopted the role of surrogate parent, protector, and caregiver and reported strong emotional investment. Robust links were found between qualities of sibling and non-alcoholic mother-child relationships, which in turn might compensate for deficits in the alcoholic father-child relationship. Factors that contributed to resilience were participants' sibling attachments, non-alcoholic mother-child relationships, and internal belief systems. Most importantly, data from this study indicated that sibling attachments act to promote resilience in alcoholic families. Notably, the sibling relationship was as important as the mother-child relationship. Clinical implications of this research include the need to provide support for non-alcoholic parents who are dependent on children of alcoholics and to foster emotionally close sibling relationships in alcoholic families.
