Amherst College professor Ilan stavans explores the impact that immigrants have had on American culture in a talk at Brooks Memorial Library in Brattleboro on October 7.2009. His talk, "Becoming Americans,” was part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series. stavans will look at how immigrants have affected culture and language in America, and discuss the role immigrant writers from the colonial period to the present have played in our nation’s consciousness. stavans is an internationally renowned critic, linguist, translator, and author. He is Lewis-Sebring Professor in Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst. His many books include Becoming Americans: Four Centuries of Immigrant Writing. The Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays series is held on the first Wednesday of every month from October through May, featuring speakers of national and regional renown. Talks are held at Brooks Memorial Library. First Wednesdays is also presented in eight other communities statewide: Burlington (at Fletcher Free Library); Manchester (at First Congregational Church, hosted by Mark Skinner Library); Middlebury (at Ilsley Public Library); Montpelier (at Kellogg-Hubbard Library); Newport/Stanstead, Quebec (at Goodrich Memorial Library and Stanstead College, in alternating months); Norwich (at Norwich Congregational Church, hosted by Norwich Public Library and Norwich Historical Society); Rutland (at Rutland Free Library); and at St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. The program is free, accessible to people with disabilities and open to the public. Upcoming Brattleboro talks include “Daddy’s War” with Dartmouth College professor Irene Kacandes on November 4; “Hamlet Contemplates the Bust of Aristotle, or Was the Prince’s Education of Any Use to Him?” with Dartmouth professor Peter Saccio on December 2; and “Projecting Leadership: Art Used for Political Ends” with Dartmouth art historian Jane Carroll on January 6.
