Stephen Emory Barton (1848-1929) was born into the notable Barton family in Oxford, Massachusetts. He was the son of Captain David Barton, who served as an assistant quartermaster for the Union during the American Civil War, and grandson of Stephen Barton Jr., a prosperous businessman who founded the mill towns of North Oxford and Bartonsville. After an accident in which his father (Capt. David Barton) fell from the rafters of the family barn, his sister Clara, then 11 years old, became his full-time nurse and helped to restore his health. Clara Barton would go on to become a Civil War nurse and founder of the American Red Cross. In 1864, when Stephen Barton was just 16 years old, he received a commission as a telegraph operator during the latter part of the Civil War. He would later work in Nova Scotia and Cincinnati as a telegrapher. By all accounts, he excelled at his work. This is confirmed by numerous letters of reference and testimonials found in the correspondence. His friend George “Lightning” Ellsworth, also a talented telegrapher, notes that “should he remain in the business until he is 21 there will not be his equal in the world”. Barton later worked as an insurance agent and as Vice-President of the American Red Cross, the organization founded by his aunt Clara. In 1870 he married Joyce Wilmot in Port Hastings (Cape Breton), Nova Scotia. They had four children but only one who survived into adulthood, Ida Myrtis. A heartbreaking letter written by Stephen in January 1872 recounts the illness and death of his firstborn child just nine days after his birth, and who had appeared to be quite healthy. His wife Joyce died in 1881 and in 1884 he married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Walker. Stephen Barton died in 1929 and is buried in North Cemetery, Oxford, Massachusetts.
