Prince\nEdward\nIsland\nis\nunique\nin\nthat\nit\nis\ncomposed\nprimarily\nof\nred\nsandstone,\nwhich\nis\nfriable\nand\nthus\nmakes\nCanada’s\nsmallest\nprovince\nparticularly\nsensitive\nto\nthe\neffects\nof\nclimate\nchange.\nCoastal\nlandowners\non\nPEI\nhave\nhistorically\nused\na\nvariety\nof\ncoastal\nerosion\nprotection\nmethods\nin\norder\nto\npreserve\ntheir\nproperties\nand\nprotect\ninfrastructure\nclose\nto\nthe\ncoastline,\nbut\nmany\nare\nunsure\nof\nthe\nmost\neffective\nmethod\nof\nprotection.\nOne\nnew\nform\nof\nshoreline\nprotection\nthat\nhas\ngained\nattention\nover\nthe\npast\ndecade,\nbut\nhas\nnot\nbeen\nimplemented\nwith\nany\nregularity\non\nPEI\nis\na\n“living\nshoreline”,\nwhich\nuses\nnatural,\nbiodegradable\nmaterials,\nas\nwell\nas\nplants,\nrather\nthan\nhard\nstone\nto\nprotect\nagainst\ncoastal\nerosion.\nIn\nAugust\nof\n2015\na\nliving\nshoreline\nwas\ninstalled\nat\nCamp\nAbegweit,\nlocated\nin\nAugustine\nCove,\nPrince\nEdward\nIsland.\nThis\nthesis\nexamined\nthe\ncoastal\nerosion\ntaking\nplace\nat\nthis\nproperty\nby\nlooking\nat\nits\nthree\nsections\nof\ncoastline;\nthe\nwestern\nsection,\nwhich\nis\nprotected\nby\narmour\nstone;\nthe\ncenter\nsection,\nwhich\nis\nprotected\nby\nliving\nshoreline;\nand\nthe\neastern\nsection,\nwhich\nhas\nno\nprotection\nmethods\nin\nplace\nand\nthus\nserved\nas\na\ncontrol\nsite.\nData\nwas\ncollected\nbetween\nSeptember,\n2015\nand\nSeptember,\n2016,\nusing\ntwo\ndifferent\nmethods;\nmeasuring\non-‐the-‐ground\nerosion\nusing\na\ntraditional\npeg-‐line\ntechnique\nat\neight\nmonitoring\nlocations,\nand\nthrough\nanalyzing\naerial\nimagery,\nacquired\nfrom\nfour\nsUAS\n(small\nUnmanned\nAerial\nSystem)\nflights.\nResults\nfrom\nthe\ntraditional\npeg-‐line\ntechnique\nshowed\nthat\nthe\ngreatest\naverage\nerosion,\nmore\nspecifically\nbluffline\nand\ncliff\nedge\nerosion,\nfrom\n2015-‐2016\ntook\nplace behind\nthe\nnatural\nsection\n(control\nsite)\nof\ncoastline\n(38\ncm),\nfollowed\nby\nthe\nliving\nshoreline\n(21\ncm)\nand\nfinally\nthe\narmour\nstone\n(4\ncm).\nExamining\nthe\northomosaics\nand\nDSMs\n(Digital\nSurface\nModels),\nit\nwas\npossible\nto\nquantify\nerosion\nusing\ntwo\nmethods:\ndelineation\nof\nthe\ncoastline\nusing\northomosaics,\nand\nvolumetric\ncalculation\nusing\nthe\nDSMs.\nDelineation\nrevealed\nthat\nthe\ngreatest\naverage\nerosion\nfrom\n2015-‐\n2016\ntook\nplace\nbehind\nthe\nliving\nshoreline\n(50\ncm),\nfollowed\nby\nthe\nnatural\nsection\nof\ncoastline\n(45\ncm)\nand\nfinally\nthe\narmour\nstone\n(6\ncm).\nVolumetric\nresults\nshowed\nthat\nthe\ngreatest\ntotal\nloss\ntook\nplace\nat\nthe\nnatural\nsection\nof\nshoreline\n(95\nm3),\nfollowed\nby\nthe\nliving\nshoreline\n(80\nm3),\nand\nfinally\nthe\nleast\nerosion\nwas\nagain\nfound\nat\nthe\narmour\nstone\n(gain\nof\n88\nm3).\nBoth\nmethodologies\nshowed\nthat\nthe\narmour\nstone\nprovided\nsuperior\nbluffline\nerosion\nprotection\nat\nCamp\nAbegweit\nover\nthe\ncourse\nof\none\nyear.\nWhile\nthere\nmay\nbe\nbenefits\nto\nusing\nliving\nshorelines,\nit\nwould\nseem\nthat\nthis\nparticular\nstyle\nof\nliving\nshoreline\nis\nnot\nsuited\nfor\nsuch\na\nhigh\nwave\nenergy\nenvironment.
