There were over twenty-five different types of product ranging from late ripening fruits (bananas, strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes), vegetables with enhanced properties (such as the potato with higher density starch that when deep fried takes up less fat; and peppers that are sweeter firmer and tastier) and of course a range of disease resistant or herbicide resistant crop plants. There was even a tree that had modified lignin, facilitating its easy removal from cellulose and therefore requiring less energy and bleaching resulting in benefits to both the paper processor and the environment. NEWS $44m in R&D Start large grants announced The Industry Research and Development Board announced on 19th March successful recipients of grants under the first round of the R&D Start program - large grants element. Sixteen projects have been offered a total of $44 million. Biota Announces Zanamivir Will Enter Phase III Clinical Trials in May 1997 Biota Holdings Limited (Australian Stock Exchange: BTA) announced on 24th February that Glaxo Wellcome plc, the Company's development partner, has informed management that Phase III clinical trials of zanamivir, or GG167, for the treatment of influenza, planned to start in 1997, will begin in Australia in May. This Southern Hemisphere trial will be a part of a comprehensive world-wide Phase III programme which will also include two separate pivotal proof of efficacy studies to be initiated in the Northern Hemisphere from October of this year.
