There were over twenty-five different\ntypes of product ranging from late ripening fruits (bananas,\nstrawberries, raspberries, tomatoes), vegetables with enhanced\nproperties (such as the potato with higher density starch that when\ndeep fried takes up less fat; and peppers that are sweeter firmer and\ntastier) and of course a range of disease resistant or herbicide\nresistant crop plants. There was even a tree that had modified lignin,\nfacilitating its easy removal from cellulose and therefore requiring\nless energy and bleaching resulting in benefits to both the paper\nprocessor and the environment. NEWS $44m in R&D Start large grants\nannounced The Industry Research and Development Board announced on 19th\nMarch successful recipients of grants under the first round of the\nR&D Start program - large grants element. Sixteen projects have\nbeen offered a total of $44 million. This Southern Hemisphere trial will be a part of a\ncomprehensive world-wide Phase III programme which will also include\ntwo separate pivotal proof of efficacy studies to be initiated in the\nNorthern Hemisphere from October of this year.
