Calçots are a horticultural product of great importance in Catalunya both its cultural aspect as economic. It is estimated that during the 2013-2015 season nearly 42 million calçots were sold, and about a quarter of them were sold in Catalunya with the 'Indicació Geogràfica Protegida Calçot de Valls' label. The strong increase in supply in recent years, has created the need of improve this crop in quality, especially in sensorial characteristics with the clear objective of providing added value to product marketed under the label of 'IGP Calçot de Valls'. In this sense it is very important to have tools that allow us to move on more efficiently in improving the sensory quality. The determination of environmental and genotypic effect on the expression of these characters seems to be one of the key points of this process. So that, 4 different genotypes has been planted (three of them developed during the breeding process in Fundació MCalçots are a horticultural product of great importance in Catalunya both its cultural aspect as economic. Phenotyping has been made during the growing season for the main agronomic characters. Morphological phenotyping and chemical characteristics have been completed with harvest in order to determine the genotypic and environmental impact on these characters. Addicionally, some correlations has been done between these traits and characteristics of the soil and also an evaluation of one of the new varieties developed in recent years (X variety). The results show a strong weight in determining the character of the environmental factor and a restricted weight of genotypic factor for agronomic traits. Regarding the correlations between the different characters studied and soil characteristics, there is a strong correlation between soil texture and the development of 'commercial' calçots, and with the electric conductivity and the Brix degree in the positive direction, and with the presence of organic matter in the negative. Finally, the variety X shows values higher than other varieties for agronomic traits (for which has been selected) and very similar to the other varieties for other characters values.
