I traveled to Kabul to give a workshop, help rebuild the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Kabul in 2004. I gave the students a Mac titanium G4 Powerbook, thanks to ZKM Karlsruhe where I work, installed with MediaWiki in Farci, and a full-featured web server. I gave the class my video cameras and digital still cameras. We made sculpture and a local website concerning 'landscape of memory.' Three students - Mahmoud, Mehdi, Meissam - accompanied me on a Friday to visit prayers at the blue-domed, holy Shiite Ziarat-I-Sakhi mosque. Outside and inside the mosque, I made this tape. It's a 'tape,' no edits. Net P2P video ought to redefine the 'news aesthetic'too often based on TV-style cut and approval. I realized during this taping experience, that 'the media' is a self-fulfilling prophecy or like Saturn, eating its children. Everything I had seen and heard second-hand via TV and print, even online (some blogs excepted) about Kabul was wrong. I am Canadian, a non-Muslim, and I had a video camera out in the open while men and women grieved or prayed, at graves outside the mosque, or inside during prayer. Noone bothered me, or bothered with me. Few even noticed me or my shiny sony camera shooting away. I taped freely, outside and inside the mosque during prayers. Outside, stretching as far as the eye could see, were motley rows of qickly dug shallow graves, 1000s, many small, too short for adults. The sandflies swarm and bite to the bone. The dust swirling around contains 11% fecal and decomposing human matter, gets in your eyes and ears. I wish I had the culture cover my face with a cloth or groom a full beard in such a situatio, just to keep that dust out of my eyes, ears and pores. Inside, there was an unmistakable air of peaceful, spiritual contemplation. There was a lot of kissing going on - touching surfaces and kissing one's hand, kissing symbols in the building. Women with or without birkas, men and children, did not take notice of me or my minicam, not even a frown or a scour or the slightest glance of censor, and the mosque was full. I mingled and even made it down to the cavern below the main dome, the holiest place in the mosque I was told. People had to wait for me. As it only held a few bodies. I was in that crawlspace as two children prayed and kissed their hands after touching the stone of its low ceiling. There were no requests, expectations or demands for renumeration. Just smiling eyes or those attending to their prayer and practice. I am not a pious person, but some of the strength and hope there you couldn't help but sense, rubbed off, and I walked a little lighter on my feet at the end of that day. This 37 minute tape is unedited, uncut. Net P2P media ought to avoid the cut and approval aesthetic of TV and mainstream video, and be 'real time' in the 'no time' space of online community.
