The starting point of transnational and border-crossing feminism(s) is dismantling and challenging oppression and advancing liberation in global and diverse contexts. More importantly, it criticises narrow ideologies, such as nationalism, reveals their limitations and places dynamics of power relations at the forefront. Crossing borders and forging connectivity is the motive behind transnational feminism(s) in order to highlight the political nature of feminism. Therefore, the emphasis is on activism to dismantle power relations and expose how gender relations are structured in any society, further revealing the systemic means through which women have been and remain discriminated against. Transnational feminism can only be achieved through translation, as Olga Castro (2020) suggests in her introduction, “The future of feminisms is in the transnational and the transnational is made through translation”. The aim of this volume is to show the role of translation in crossing borders of solidarity between feminists from, between, and to the Arab region and their counterparts globally. When translated, the emphasis is on how resistance against various systems and institutions can promote equality, justice and peace. The central aim is to learn from each other’s experiences, challenge dominant forms of knowledge, and position the local/trans-local within the global to create alternatives. The emphasis on the Arab region, geographically, is to make it a point of departure, to represent the Global South-South interactions, and their interactions with the rest of the world. The focus of this volume is the diverse experiences of women who live within, between, and at the margins or boundaries of Arab societies and around the world, revealing how they transcend those imaginary and physical boundaries and speak up for women’s rights in the region and globally. Translating women’s ‘stories’ encompasses the experiences of women who live in cultural borderlands and spaces between cultures and gives the opportunity to engage with women who share similar lives of violence, oppression, forms of exploitation and privileges around the world. It is a political act and is a step towards healing, resisting the culture of origin and seeking justice. It is putting into practice what transnational feminism is about in different languages, seeking solidarity, support and establishing ‘circuits of power’. The volume seeks to answer questions This volume aims at answering the following questions: how can gendered discourses in Arabic (in literature, politics, socio-politics, law, history...etc) “travel” into English-Arabic-English; how does translation mediate between aesthetics and activism and how does it shape the target texts in terms of meanings, representations and receptions? Similarly, how does translation mobilise feminist discourses to ‘travel’ around the world, facilitating connectivity across borders among feminists globally? How and why texts, theories, authors, and cultural productions have ‘travelled’ across borders, and who has the power to influence this ‘travel’? More importantly, how can translation help mediate women’s silences into acts of solidarity? How are women’s silences narrated, translated, circulated and received?
