ПОСТАТЬ ВАСИЛЯ КАРАЗІНА У ПРАЦЯХ ЗАХІДНОЄВРОПЕЙСЬКИХ ТА ПІВНІЧНОАМЕРИКАНСЬКИХ ДОСЛІДНИКІВ

Résumé
The present paper deals with the study of publications of researches from West European and North American countries that describe different aspects of biography and creative heritage of Vasyl’ Nazarovych Karazin (1773–1842). He was a prominent person in Ukrainian history of the end of 18th – the first half of 19th centuries and well-known as public figure, organizer of education and science, inventor and innovator. These and other aspects of V. N. Karazin’s activity were emphasized repeatedly in Ukrainian and foreign historical literature from the mid of 19th to the early of 21st centuries. Remarkable, that historiography about this problem are researched, complete and multifaceted in Ukraine in general. However foreign massif of publications where V. N. Karazin’s life and activity were described (specifically or in a general context of the history of the Russian empire in the end of 18th – the first half of 19th centuries) is just beginning to open up for Ukrainian researchers. Articles, books and encyclopedic papers that had published from 1866 to 2019 were analyzed in the present paper. They were written by famous Slavists and historians of science and technique. These studies were published in the United Kingdom, Canada, USA, Netherlands, Sweden, Czech Republic (when its lands were part of the Austrian Empire and later – the Austrian-Hungarian Empire). Complex of general scientific and special-historical methods was used in this paper, as well as techniques for studying sources that allow detect images. It is demonstrated that these publications described all key aspects of V. N. Karazin’s biography, like his role in reforming of the University education system in the Russian Empire; foreign policy proposals; inventive and research activity. It is noted that authors of all these researches recognized the superiority of V. N. Karazin in all areas of his activity (as founder of one of the oldest Ukrainian Universities in Kharkiv; one of forerunner of Pan-Slavic idea in the Russian Empire; scholar who has a global priority for some ideas and inventions in meteorology and chemistry). It is concluded that V. N. Karazin’s works were appreciated by authoritative representatives of the largest intellectual centers of the Old and New Worlds. This makes it possible to assert that this figure of Ukrainian history gained worldwide recognition. This further updates the need to further promote his creative heritage as well as information about his contribution into Ukrainian cultural process among the mass audience. Keywords: V. N.
