The topic of this dissertation is the changes occurred in the last fifty years\nin the care and domestic activities. The dissertation applies the daily life\ntheories in conjunction with the gender categories. Both have helped in\nreading the impact that the wide spread of domestic technologies – within\nthe larger process of modernisation - had on care and how this impact has\nopened new social and individual spaces inducing the transformation on\nmale and female roles.\nThe empirical part of the research analyses the biographies of women who\nlive in two different contexts: Cosenza in Italy and Vaughan in Canada.\nThe two groups of women share the fact that all of them were born and\nbred in the provincial area of Cosenza. All of them have gone through the\npassage from a prevalent rural society to a modern society. The expatriate\nwomen have gone through this passage in the time of their physical\njourney from Italy to Canada founding themselves immediately in a society\nhighly industrialised and modernised. Those who have staid in Calabria\nhave gone through the great transformation of Southern Italy not as a\nsuddenly change but as going through a long period, almost thirty years,\nduring which they have to face various social and economical models all of\nwhich different from those of context of advanced capitalism.\nI have then chosen two geographical areas where the resources for the\nfemale identity as from a process of modernisation were differentiated.\nThe comparative work is positioned on a double analytical level: the\nhorizontal one compares the same generations but that have grown in\ndifferent social contexts. The vertical one compares the next generations.\nFrom the narratives it emerges that in both the biographies of the elderly\nwomen as well as in the progression of generations, in Canada as well as\nin Calabria, the end result is a female identity more aware of rights and\nactively engaged in defending them\nThe emancipating pathways are differentiated from a unique qualitative\npoint of view as the result of forms of interaction established between the\nwomen interviewed and the institutional frameworks on which the two\ncontexts are based.\nIn the Canadian case the women emancipation appears to be as the result\nof an adaptive process to a system where the modernising resources are\nin abundance and require a break from the traditional model.\nThe new female identity that emerges from the inclusion in the new\ncontext is then the result of the break related to the decision to migrate\nand to acceptance of the developmental processes of the industrial\nsociety.\nOn the contrary, in the case of the Calabria women the pressures from the\ncontext, perhaps because such pressures have a contradictory nature in\nrelation to the classical model of economic development, leave space for\nthe emerging of changes that reflect more the subjectivity and the private\nsphere, thus showing qualitative differentiation from the change of the\neconomic and social identity. On one hand the passage is mediated by the“double presence” regime that is affirmed as an obligation and then a\nchoice, on the other hand the prevalent presence of the housewife model\nprepares the conditions for the younger women to assert an identity for\nwhich they can choose to be independent, to be an individual. The concept\nof the “double presence” is fully applicable to the Canadian context, less\nso to understand the modernisation process in Calabria. In the former it\nbecomes soon “tradition” to which the new generations are socialised, in\nthe latter it is the result of many aspirations.\nIn both cases the domestic technologies are functional to a more general\nmodel of development.\nIn the case of Calabrian society, the wide spread of domestic technologies\nis a gradual process, being more a sign of access to consumerism and\nacquisition of status and less a sign of a coherent and complete process of\norganisation of the housework. In the case of Canadian society, the\ndomestic technology is, instead, immediately available and can be\nunderstood within the logic of organisational rationality that is predominant\nin that context since the 50s. They free time and reduce the physical effort\nbut do not create spare time available to women. In the Canadian case\nthey allow women to make housework more rational and fast, thus to be\nfree and available toward the labour market. In the Calabrian case they aid\na generation of mothers who takes on themselves all the care and in doing\ndo makes free the next generation of women from the house work. This\nallows the creation of such conditions that, particularl
