Medical Breathing Circuit Coiling and Packaging Process
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
BOMImed is a leading manufacturer and supplier of medical equipment in Winnipeg, MB. The demand for one of BOMImed’s products, medical breathing circuits, has grown to the point that the current packaging process cannot keep up. The main reason for this issue is that the current automated packaging process used by BOMImed does not accept all variations of circuit configurations. Circuit variations include different configurations of attachments such as air filters and elbows which connect to the wye joint at the end of the tube. The primary objective of this project is to design a fully automated system that can handle all variations of breathing circuits and complete the coiling and packaging process with a cycle time of 5 seconds. The designed process consists of three major operations: loading, coiling, and transferring to the bag. In the stage of the loading process, the circuit is transferred on the input conveyor towards the top surface of the coiling assembly. The circuit is then placed in the center of the top plate of the coiling assembly by retractable rollers which reduce the risk of damaging the parts of the assembly. After the loading process is complete, the wye of the circuit is gripped by the grabbing mechanism, and simultaneously the coffin box assembly slides down to secure the circuit from unwinding during the coiling process. This coiling process is completed by winding the circuit around a set of pins placed in a circle. Once the coiling process is done, the coiling and grabbing mechanism’s pins retract, and the coffin box slides along with the circuit inside it towards the bagging equipment. A pusher plate mounted inside the coffin box pushes the circuit out of the coffin box and into the bag after it reaches the existing bagging machine. Finally, the bag gets sealed and the whole process repeats. The entire design follows the standards and specifications defined at the beginning of the project. The provided solution ensures no damage to the circuit and prevents kinking or excessive bending throughout the coiling and packaging processes. The machine coils the circuit so that it fits inside a 14-inch by 18-inch plastic bag. The design incorporates an automation control system which operates all of the mechanisms in a specific timeframe in the process and allows the system to achieve the target cycle time of 5 seconds. The project deliverables are attached to this report, including engineering reference drawings, bill of materials, purchased part selection details, and CAD model renders for components and the whole assembly. Aspects of the design were analyzed analytically and numerically to ensure feasibility, performance, safety, and other relevant criteria. The analysis results are included in the report. The BOM cost of this project is $13,300. Although the final design exceeds the acceptable budget by roughly $3300, it does achieve the desired outcomes and offers a suitable solution to the problem that was identified. This design is a viable option for further development, testing, then implementation.
