" I loved this song, it reminded me of The Human League's "Don't You Want Me, Baby?" with the divergent male/female viewpoints. Also, the track actually came out last year, but sometimes it takes awhile to become an overnight sensation. Back Up The Truck, 2011 Note: For the second week in a row we get the female duo from the really far north. Song source KEXP says that " they sound more akin to the Mississippi Delta than the Nordic fjords, but they do also blend in a bit of their own culture, as with the Nordic table harp that Bubba often plays. Perhaps the most charming thing about them, though, is that their rustic and winsome ways belie a modern sensibility and often a sultry suggestiveness. " ( More Info ) The Sunny Era "Up All Night" 'Lost in the Sea of Ghosts' self-released, 2012 Note: The Gimme Noise blog says " Not new to the scene, but not veterans either, Minneapolis band The Sunny Era fall somewhere in between. Not so their music. The three-piece band's latest album, Lost in the Sea of Ghosts, characterizes a collection of songs folding in a near-immaculate pace with tempting textures, underneath darkly, delightful lyrics. " ( More Info ) Cahalen Morrison & Eli West "Loretta" 'Our Lady of the Tall Trees' self-released, 2012 Note: The legendary No Depression says that " Itâs a measure of how successful Morrison and West are in creating their sepia toned world that their version of Loretta jars the impression that we are listening to an archived recording from the dusty old days. Theirs is a fine reading but the familiarity of the song accords it an outsider status, a glitch in the matrix if you like " This track is a cover version of the Townes Van Zandt song. ( More Info ) Matisyahu "Happy Hanukkah" single Fallen Sparks, 2012 Note: Appropriately we finish this episode shortly after the sun sets, marking the beginning of the Jewish Festival of Lights. Heeb Magazine says " Oh Matisyahu. Everyone loves this guy. Unless they hate him. It seems like thereâs no middle-ground when it comes to peopleâs opinions of the (formerly Hasidic) reggae superstar. But, whether you prefer your âyahu with, or sans-beard, thereâs no denying his heart is in the right place with this one.
