A autumn visit to Waterloo’s S ugarbush Park (Albert Street – Weber Street) to enjoy the fall leaf colour . This Waterloo Park, measuring about 10 hectares (25 acres), is located in the Sugarbush neighbourhood bounded by Weber Street North, Longwood and Greenbrier Drives, Albert Street and Blythewood Road. The beech-maple former woodlot was annexed from Waterloo Township in 1965. Most of the neighbourhood's residences date from 1965-1970. The park is located in Ward 6 (Central-Columbia). Bisecting trails approximately divide its rectangular area along both axis. Historically part of the German Tract Company lot 6, block 2 of the Six Nations Reserve (Haldimand Tract), lot 6 was randomly drawn by Jacob Erb (1768-1834),a member of the German Tract Company syndicate, as a prelude to the company’s settlement in Upper Canada. Jacob, a Pennsylvania-German Mennonite who arrived in 1805, was an older brother of Abraham Erb (1772-1830), Waterloo's founder, whose 1808 sawmill and 1816 gristmill impounded Laurel Creek to form Waterloo Dam (later Silver Lake) at centre of today's Waterloo Park. In 1806, Abraham and his wife Magdalena (nee Erb) settled on 365 ha (900 ac) of swampy land beside Beaver (now Laurel) Creek, which he purchased in 1805 from Jacob and Daniel Erb. Erb's 1816 2 storey grist mill operated for 111 years. Today's replica, near the old millrace, is a typical 1800s generic design. His 1820 log wall schoolhouse is also located in Waterloo Park. The text of the Ontario Archaeological and Historic Sites Board's historical plaque states: "ABRAHAM ERB 1772-1830 Like many pioneers of this district, the founder of Waterloo was a German Mennonite from Franklin County, Pennsylvania. In 1805 he purchased 900 acres of bush land on the site of this town. He settled here in 1806 and erected the first sawmill two years later. His gristmill, built in 1816, remained in continuous operation for 111 years and formed the nucleus and social centre of a thriving municipality." The Government of Canada historical plaque, located at the Waterloo Pioneer Tower overlooking the Grand River in Kitchener, states: "In the year 1800 a small number of Mennonite families arrived from Pennsylvania to settle Block 2, former Six Nation land along the Grand River. Others, mainly Mennonites, followed during the next three years until problems regarding ownership of the land curtailed the migration. Representatives were sent back to Pennsylvania to raise the money necessary to secure clear title to the land, with the result that a joint stock company was formed and 24,000 ha purchased. Pennsylvania 'Dutch' settlers quickly took up this land, creating the first sizeable inland settlement in Upper Canada."
