The Diviners, written by Canadian novelist Margaret Laurence, is the last of her five Manawaka novels and represents the culmination of all the trends shown throughout the Manawaka cycle. It furthers Laurence’s emphasis on self-empowerment for women, especially the female artist, and intensifies her use of innovative narrative strategies. It is patterned as a pilgrimage along epic lines and features a protagonist and writer, Morag Gunn, and her quest for identity. Through a spiritual journey, Morag Gunn explores herself as a woman, a mother, and a writer in her memories of the past and her vision of the future. She also contemplates the essence of writing as a creative and communicative process concerning the problematic relationship between history and legend, fiction and reality, words and world, and life and art. With the help of her several divining mentors, she learns that these pairs can’t be distinguished from each other, as they exist as a blend of ambiguity. She then accepts and welcomes “the thought of history and fiction interweaving.” She realizes that the writer’s proper reading of life and expression of its pattern is to reduce chaos, dispel ambiguity, and eliminate blurred vision. With these awakenings, she intends the title of her last novel in the dual sense of inscribing it and passing the torch of divining creativity to the younger generation embodied in Pique, who combines words and music, as well as Celtic and Metis myths, to celebrate her dual heritage. Finally, Morag completes her work, Laurence concludes her Manawaka cycle, and there is silence as the last word after the cycle, which means the completion of a full circle. Margaret Laurence is always concerned with how woman’s personal, autobiographical fiction can be made sufficiently expansive to contain wider and deeper social and political or historical issues. And this novel problematizes distinctions between the personal and the political or historical, just as these insist on connections across the generic boundaries of fantasy and realism as modes of fictional discourse. And Laurence, as a historical novelist, recognizes the ways that heritage is reinvented as it is passed down through generations, creating new myths to fit the new place. She shows that our task is not to reject the past but to assimilate it, to take the language and make it truly ours, to write out of our own familiar words and out of our deepest observations of our people and our place on this planet.
