Expressions of attention difficulties among female and male elementary students
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Students' attention difficulties are a growing concern in the Canadian culture particularly with its impact on education and mental health. Currently, educators and researchers comprehend this emergent phenomenon through the lens of medical descriptions such as the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder with clinical pictures and educational interventions spotlighting male normative experiences and socialization. Alternatively, my study critically explores behaviours, perceptions, and experiences of attention difficulties in the forefront of female/male development. This endeavour is accomplished through a multi-method, multi-informant design that involves direct observations, surveys, and interviews. The sample included two grade 6-7 classes containing 39 students (19 females and 20 males) and two teachers from two inner-city schools on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Direct observations during class-work measured off-task attention behaviours for all student participants. All students also completed emotional-behavioural surveys, and a sub-sample of students was randomly selected for semi-structured interviews. The teachers of the two classes completed a standard checklist measuring ADHD characteristics on all students in their classes. Teachers also completed an emotional-behavioural survey on a randomly selected sub-sample of students and participated in interviews. Through the time-sampling and event-sampling observations, 1 found that despite females and males having similar patterns of attention aberrations, males' displays of attention difficulties have the stronger relationships with the teacher's evaluations of attention problems. Gender-specific correlational trends of attention difficulties and affiliated emotional-behavioural characteristics also highlighted gender-specific profiles of at-risk profiles of at-risk behaviours in males and females. Thematic results from narrative observations and interviews triangulated with the structured observations and further uncovered unique gender-specific activities and perceptions of students' off-task attention aberrations. The qualitative and quantitative data, together, supports the hypothesis that female and male students have comparable rates of attention difficulties, yet they have gender-specific forms of expressions during off-task attention engagement. In brief, the results lead me to challenge the current premise of male preponderance in attention difficulties and explore an alternative route, which may account for documented gender disparities. Means on developing such method are discussed along with limitations and proactive practice applications.
