The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of prevalance of alcohol-substance abuse, the preferences of substances used, sociodemographical properties and the usage of alcohol of patients diagnosed as schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder on the clinical properties and prognosis of schizophrenia and BAD. Sociodemographic Data Form, Medical History Form, Brief Disability Questionnaire, The UKU Side Effect Rating Scale, Ġnsight Rating Scale (IRS), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) , Fagerström Nicotine Dependence Test (FNND), Global Assessment of Functionality Scale (GAF), Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) are applied to 100 schizophrenic and BAD patients recruited to the study. In addition to these scales, Scale for the Assessment of Positive Sympoms (SAPS), Scale fort he Negative Symptoms (SANS), Calgary Depression Scale are applied to schizophrenic patients while Hamilton Depression Scale and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) are used to assess patients with bipolar affective disorder. Patients with a history of alcohol, nicotine or substance abuse or the ones continuing to use these substances were identified with DSM-IV diagnosis criterias. Patients with and without alcohol abuse history are compared in terms of sociodemographic properties, disesase information and the scores of the scales they performed. The difference between patients with schizophrenia and BAD groups was not significant in terms of lifelong and ongoing alcohol abuse prevalance and rates of alcohol abuse disorders. The most preferred substances among patients with schizophrenia and BAD were nicotine, alcohol, biperidene, marijuana and volatile substance respectively.The difference between males and females were significant in terms of lifelong and ongoing prevalance of alcohol substance abuse in favor of women. Patients with schizophrenia were determined to have lower scores on IRS and GAF while performing higher scores on BPRS compared to BAD with alcohol substance abuse.
