Variations in carbon dioxide and energy fluxes in a subarctic peatland with thawing permafrost
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Peatlands cover only 3% of the earth's land area while they store roughly 30% of the global soil carbon. Many of the earth's peatlands are found at high latitudes, in regions containing continuous and discontinuous permafrost. As permafrost warming and thaw occur, the carbon stored in permafrost regions may become available to the atmosphere through decomposition, resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions.Permafrost peatlands have considerable heterogeneity with varying microforms, which in turn have considerable variances in gas exchanges due to differences in vegetation, water table, ground temperature and frost table. To understand how these systems will transform with climate change, one must understand the linkages and interactions between these components. This research examines how the small-scale processes within a heterogeneous peatland integrate to explain the exchanges between the thawing permafrost palsa peatland in sub-Arctic (Stordalen, Sweden) and the atmosphere. We assess the CO 2 exchange using two approaches: analyses of eddy covariance (EC) derived fluxes for the thawed and for the permafrost sections of the palsa, and auto-chamber measured fluxes from the dominant plant functional types (PFTs) that make up the EC footprint. We find that the energy fluxes are partitioned differently between the palsa and the thawed bog, and while the gross primary production and ecosystem respiration are significantly different between land cover types, the net ecosystem exchange is similar. The energy balance is partitioned to greater evapotranspiration and subsurface heat storage in the bog compared to the sections of the palsa where permafrost is prevalent. The bog is much wetter and has a higher coverage of sedges and mosses. The thawed bog has much larger GPP than the
