The German's Woollen Mill ruins are located on private property near the GRCA's Cambridge to Paris Rail Trail, 2 km upstream from Glen Morris (formerly Dawson's Bridge) in South Dumfries Township, Brant County. The ruins comprise the substantial limestone walls of a three storey rectangular structure, measuring approximately 12 by 18 metres (40 by 60 feet), devoid of the interior floors and roof. Perhaps they collapsed into the cellar, which is now covered by a rubble-littered earth floor. Scant patches of plaster and lathe remain on the interior walls. In 1820, Lewis German and family emigrated from Prince Edward County, Ontario, to the area, known then as German's Hollow. In 1867, two of their nearby St. George relatives, brothers Alva and Sydney German, constructed the woollen mill with water power supplied from the adjacent Grand River. A low dam, the remnants of which are visible as the Massasauga Rapids on the Grand River near the ruin, diverted water into the millrace which entered and exited the mill via stone arches in the walls. Sydney later sold his share of the mill to his brother-in-law, James McCrea, and the mill continued operating under Alva German, whose house on nearby East River Road overlooks the site. In 1886, a little girl fell in the millrace, was swept into the mill and drowned. Increased competition from nearby larger mills made the German Mill unprofitable, and by 1900 Alva had passed it on to James McCrea and his wife Nettie. She converted the mill into the Grand River Lodge, investing heavily in its renovation and furnishings. In contained 2 dining rooms, a large kitchen and public hall, private dining room and washrooms on the first floor, 13 bedrooms and washrooms on the second floor, and a third storey attic. The lodge, which was obscured from the road by the dense Carolinian forest (the 'glen' of Glen Morris), earned a poor return for the McCreas. In 1941, a lodge guest, Dan Hoover, was murdered at the hotel. Nettie McCrea subsequently sold the lodge to Thomas Robson, a Brantford bookseller, for $500. He renovated it into a summer residence. In 1944, the Canadian Pacific Railway severed his only road access to the residence to expand their Lake Erie and Northern Railway (LE&N). In 1945, South Dumfries Township purchased the Robson summer residence for $688. Although briefly operated by the township, by 1946 it was rumoured to be slated for demolition. However, the empty shell remains and has gained notoriety in paranormal circles as a haunted site. In 1994, the Grand River Conservation Authority rehabilitated the former LE&N rail bed as the popular 18 kilometre Cambridge to Paris Rail Trail.
