Individual, social and environmental correlates of weight control in Canadian women
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The four studies of this thesis address the gaps in knowledge of the key environmental influencers, psychosocial mediators and moderators of energy balance related behaviours influencing weight control among two disparate groups of women. Women actively engaged in regular exercise training of a more vigorous nature may have conflicting factors that influence their eating habits, physical activity behaviours and subsequent weight control. Socioeconomically disadvantaged (SED) mothers suffer disproportionately high rates of overweight and abdominal obesity and may have limited accessibility, affordability and availability of opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity. Study 1 confirmed that increasing numbers of all ages of Canadian women of varying fitness levels and physical abilities run for weight control. Study 2 observed that active living habits and running > 40 km/week are associated with higher odds of healthy BMI and WC in women running for weight maintenance, however running > 40 km/week did not appear to counter the negative impact of eating fast food ⥠2/week on BMI and WC in those runners trying to lose weight. In contrast, Study 3 noted the lack of accessibility, affordability and availability of community-based physical activities and a lack of vigorous leisure time physical activities as key challenges for weight control of SED mothers at key transition times in their lives. In Study 4, while both motherhood and parity were correlates of higher odds of overweight and abdominal obesity among multi-ethnic SED mothers, they were also coping with prevalent food insecurity (61%) and diets that met few of the national guidelines. The novelty of the HES, developed for this research as an indirect approach to assess the multidimensional components of Canada's national dietary guidelines, was its ability to differentiate diet quality among SED mothers with different degrees of food insecurity and women runners with differing self-initiated weight management strategies. Appropriate messaging and support programs, adapted to the needs of distinct sub populations, should be further developed to support weight control efforts of Canadian women.
