Notice bibliographique
Résumé
This 2.7 kilometre walk begins at the Laurel Trail at Westmount and Bearinger Roads. It follows the perimeter of Laurel Creek Conservation area on the Doreen Thomas Trail on Bearinger Road and Laurelwood Dr, then north on Beaver Creek Road to the Laurel Creek culvert. A small plaque, mounted beside a bench on the trail commemorates Doreen Thomas (1926-1997). "Long-time Waterloo resident who served on the Waterloo County Board of Education, Waterloo city and regional councils, Waterloo North Hydro Commission, and the Grand River Conservation Authority. This trail is named in honour of her significant community involvement, including her leadership in chairing the Laurel Creek Watershed study that helps preserve the watershed lands." City of Waterloo, October 24, 1998" Laurel Creek flows east for 21 km, from its swampland sources in southeast Wellesley Township, across Waterloo to its confluence with the Grand River at Bridgeport. Including its main tributary, Clare Creek, its 77 square km drainage basin includes about 80% of Waterloo. Laurel Creek Conservation Area occupies former farmland (potatoes) in the northwest corner of Waterloo. Residential neighbourhoods now surround the former rural location. Development of this 294 hectare Grand River Conservation Authority park began with land purchases in 1964, followed by construction in 1965-1967, before opening to the public in 1971. The reservoir was prepared in 1965-66 concurrently with the dam's construction. Stumps from the cut trees were left in the reservoir to provide fish shelter. The entrance road, parking and fencing were completed in 1967. The 1965 estimated of cost of construction, $250,000, was provided by the province but the GRCA was obliged to repay 25% over the following 13 years. Laurel Creek reservoir, the smallest of seven such administered by the GRCA, was built to regulate the creek's water flow to prevent flooding from spring run-off and to augment summer low flows. The reservoir is dewatered in autumn. With a surface area of 101 hectares, the reservoir has a maximum capacity of 1.5 million cubic metres. Its greatest depth is 3 metres, but 60% is less than one metre deep. A 7 metre wildfowl observation tower, swimming (121 m beach), canoeing, camping (130 sites), sports, picnicking (3 pavilions), skiing and hiking (4 km of trails) are popular park features. The adjacent nature centre opened in 1977. Visitors, which number around 60,000 annually, have been shifting proportionally from day use to camping over several decades.
