We were confronted with the task of succeeding Ettore Gadioli in the organization of the Varenna Conference on Nuclear Reaction Mechanisms, following his wish of handing on the care of an appointment he was able to make a traditional reference for the nuclear dynamics community at first, and then well beyond.Such a task has been for us an exciting honor, that we were very happy to share with Mark B. Chadwick and Toshihiko Kawano of Los Alamos National Laboratory, who have shown their interest and provided invaluable support since long time.By dedicating this 12th edition to Ettore on the occasion of his retirement, we strongly wanted not to miss a unique opportunity to recognize both his remarkable contributions to the nuclear physics development -part of which have been reviewed by Mark in his speech summarized in the manuscript included in these Proceedings -and his enthusiastic and creative effort as Chairman of this Conference since 1982 -documented by the Conference history vividly sketched by Ettore himself -.A further significant reason making really special this 2009 program, has been the celebration of Kiyomi Ikeda on the occasion of his 75th birthday.Thanks in particular to the dedicated engagement of many colleagues of the Japanese School, whose scientific contribution and support to the Varenna Conference have happily grown up along the years, it was possible to dedicate to Prof. Ikeda one of the Conference days, gathering an outstanding series of talks which are presented at the beginning of the book and are related to his remarkable contributions to the study of nuclear structure.The death of Peter E. Hodgson, an eminent scientist and a life long fellow of the Varenna Conference, which was dedicated to him in 1997, brought sadness just a few months before the Conference took place.We wish to include here a memory of him, which Ettore, having had long familiarity with him, agreed to prepare.This two volume publication includes about 80 papers, showing the quality and the variety of the 19 oral sessions attended last June by more than 100 participants.The topics spanned from fundamental research involving nuclear reactions in a range varying from low to LHC energy, and (exotic) nuclear structure, the discussion of new detector performances and upcoming facility projects, and the account of nuclear physics applications, with a particular focus to medicine.We look forward to further pursuing the Varenna Conference tradition, offering to young researchers the possibility of reporting about their work, in close contact with experienced scholars, and enjoying the opportunity of fruitful interactions in the wonderful and cosy Villa Monastero's frame.We are indebted to all colleagues who kindly served as members of the International Advisory Committee and the Local Organizing Committee, reviewing and triggering possible contributions, the number of which eventually exceeded the usual capacity of the Conference.
