Examining the amount and variability among terrestrial detritus input of an Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) stream: Baseline data collection for a western Newfoundland stream
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The riparian zone governs many different aspects of lotic ecosystem through shading, temperature regulation, stream bank stabilization, and input of organic matter. Benthic macroinvertebrates use coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) input from riparian vegetation as a food resource and are in turn consumed by stream dwelling predators such as fish. Therefore, there is a trophic link between riparian input to streams and fish populations in lotic ecosystems. This project focuses on quantifying the amount and type of riparian detritus entering a stream system on the west coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The overarching objective of this was to assess suitable juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) habitat based on a food availability. The current Atlantic salmon management paradigm in this and other regional salmon rivers focuses on physical habitat only, and ignores ecological/trophic relationships between salmon and their food resources. Briefly, there is likely variability among sites within a river in riparian input; areas with high input of organic detritus should have an abundance of macroinvertebrates thus better salmon habitat than sites with low amounts of organic input. Fifty-nine litter traps were placed randomly throughout Cook’s Brook, Newfoundland to quantify variability in detritus input from the headwaters to its mouth at the ocean. Field sampling took place from July to November 2023 with the litter traps being visited four times throughout this period. Detritus was most prevalent in the autumn months (84% of total capture) with deciduous leaf litter being the most observed form (86% of total capture). Site variables were analyzed to determine if there are factors which determine the potential for CPOM input using a Pearson product-moment correlation test. The results of this study provide baseline data on CPOM input for Cook’s Brook that can be used by fisheries managers to improve assessment of juvenile salmon habitat. This study highlights the need for continued research on other factors contributing the classification of satisfactory fish habitat within the Cook’s Brook ecosystem.
