Archaeological Building Recording at the Kendal Works, Carver Street, Sheffield
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
In March 2004 ARCUS were commissioned by Monaghans on behalf of their client to undertake a programme of archaeological building recording on the former Kendal Works on Carver Street, Sheffield. The Kendal works is a nineteenth century Grade I! listed workshop complex within the City Centre Conservation Area. The buildings contained within the complex are typical of the small scale courtyard workshops that are characteristic of Sheffield in this period. Permission has been granted for the redevelopment of the site. The plans for this development include the construction of a cafe bar with associated offices and a retail unit, and the need for archaeological work was identified as part of the planning conditions for this development. The purpose of this survey was to document any remaining evidence for the historical development and use of the site, to assess the archaeological significance of any original features or machinery remaining on the site, and to create a permanent record of any parts of the site that will be affected by proposed alterations and extensions. Recording took the form of annotated plans, site notes, and both black and white monochrome print and medium format photography. This was undertaken in conjunction with archive research and map regression analysis. As a result of the archaeological recording it has been possible to identify at least 6 main phases of construction, beginning in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, and ending in the early part of the twentieth century. Evidence for the existence of cutlery workshops, scissor manufacture, offices, and warehouses was also recorded on the site, although much of the evidence for past/historic use has been removed by later development. All of the buildings have been altered or renovated to some extent of recent years, and most of the rooms have been stripped of any original features or machinery, however a number of individual historic details are still evident, such as a highly ornate and solid steel safe in the Carver Street Range, and an early twentieth century circular saw within the central courtyard building. An archaeological watching brief maintained throughout the development works identified the remains of a buried floor from the former east range. In addition during the removal of an inserted internal staircase accessed from Carver Street a newspaper was discovered. This was dated to 23rd July 1924 and may provide a date for when the staircase was inserted.
