A study of sediment movement in a small lake in Halifax County, Nova Scotia
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The physical properties of Loon Lake near Halifax, Nova Scotia, were studied in order to recognize the processes that influence sedimentation and sediment mobility in small, shallow, organic-dominated lakes. The results will be used to improve our understanding of the manner in which sediment oscillations are formed. Sonar profiling showed that Loon Lake was a very shallow basin partially filled with fine organic sediments. The lake has a maximum depth of 2.1 m and a mean depth of 1.4 m. The organic sediments (gyttja) are widely distributed within the basin and are first deposited at depths of approximately 1 m. They become increasingly thicker toward the middle of the lake where the greatest depth to bedrock occurs. Coring revealed a visible sediment oscillation near the top of all cores. From south to north across the lake, the oscillation thickened to approximately two centimetres. Thin sections of the oscillation sediment and the gyttja show an increase in clay content and a virtual absence of sand and silt sized grains in the oscillation sediment. The lack of silt and sand grains indicate that the observed sediment oscillation was produced during ice free conditions. Loon Lake is occasionally affected by hurricanes and strong storms whose intense rainfall and high winds are sufficient to cause sudden influx of fine sediments from an unstable landscape and significant wavebase interaction with lake bottom sediments. The result is extensive turbulence and sediment movement within the basin. This study indicates that shallow lakes are susceptible to wave induced sediment resuspension and redistribution. It was also concluded that sediment oscillations can be produced by short term, catastrophic events, and not necessarily a prolonged period of climate change.
