A Monument for an Earthquake-Rotated Monument
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
mesoseismal zone were rotated (Cucci and Tertulliani, 2011). One prominent earthquake-rotated object (ERO) is a war memorial in the small town of Paganica, a community that suffered European Macroseismic Scale intensity XIII damage. It is located at 42.3586 ° N and 13.4713 ° E, opposite the heavily damaged historical church of Paganica. The location is less than 350 m from the surface rupture of the causative fault of the L’Aquila 2009 earthquake. The war memorial is an unusual ERO because the 14.7° (0.26 rad) counterclockwise-rotated monument is a simple block with a height-to-width ratio of 1.52 (Fig. 1). In detail, Hinzen et al. (2013) described and modeled the rotation of the stocky block of the monument. They found the strong rotation was probably caused by the unevenness of the supporting base plate in combination with strong ground motion. Upon revisiting the monument in April 2015, six years after the earthquake, we were curious whether the block had been restored to its original position. Not only had the object been left in its rotated state, local authorities placed a stone epigraph next to the rotated block commemorating the event and its victims, thus permanently documenting the rotation (Fig. 2). The Italian text translates to: “A permanent witness of the earthquake at 3:32 of 6 April 2009, wavelike vibrating and rotating, the stone has undergone a rotation of 17 degrees around its axis.” The central part of Paganica is still considered a red zone and is closed to the public (Fig. 3). Even though earthquakes can have a long-lasting impact on affected localities, life goes on. A small but cozy-looking wine and cheese shop has opened ▴ Figure 1.
