Attercliffe Waterside, Sheffield: historic building recording level 3 and photographic record
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
level 3 HBR of four historic buildings and photographic record of six later industrial buildings York Archaeology (Sheffield) was commissioned by WSP UK Ltd., on behalf of CITU and Homes England, to undertake a historic building recording at the site known as Attercliffe Waterside, on Effingham Road and Attercliffe Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, in advance of the proposed development of the site (planning application ref. 23/02176/FUL). The survey was undertaken between August and September 2024, and a structural watching brief in March 2025. The historic buildings 1-3 were erected as part of the late 19th century 'Attercliffe Steel Works & Wire Mills'. Building 1 would have comprised large finishing workshops, although later included several offices. Building 2 originated as a small extension abutting the north elevation of a large steel workshop, which later became part of an engine house and currently an electric sub-station with considerable alterations and later rebuilt construction. Building 3 is composed of two merged ranges along the canal side and also part of the late 19th century Steel Works. The east range appears to have been built slightly earlier than the west range although both are depicted on the 1890 Ordnance Survey town plan. Building 4 is a much-altered construction although with remnants of the Pickford, Holland & Co. Ltd. ganister & silica brick manufacturers (Eclipse ganister works), and dates from the late 19th century. It is likely that the original workshop was used for grinding ganister as indicated by several bearing frames of a line shafting which would have powered stone-grinding wheels used in the fireclay industry. Buildings 5-10 were subject to photographic records as these are later workshops of minor significance. Nevertheless, Building 7 comprises remnants of an early 20th century steel workshop, most notably the area along the canal side with an elegant arcaded façade. Building 5 is a mid-century portal-frame workshop which abuts the south elevation of Building 4. Building 8 is a public house built in the early 1960s replacing an earlier inn which was destroyed during the blitz. Building 9 is a later 20th century construction which incorporate the west elevation of the east range of Building 3. Finally Building 10 is the east boundary wall of the site along Staniforth Road built and rebuilt from the mid-20th century, although it contains three cast-iron pedestals that supported the pilasters of a shop frontage of the former early 20th century Co-op store which was also damaged by bombing during the blitz.
