Archaeological Desk Based Assessment at Unit C1, Angel Road Works, Advent Way, London, N18 3AH
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Border Archaeology (BA) was instructed by Zine Properties Investment Ltd. to produce an Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment (ADBA) with regard to the site of a proposed commercial development at Unit C1, Angel Road Works, Advent Way, London N18 3AH. This ADBA assesses the impact of the proposed development on buried heritage assets (archaeological remains) and forms an initial stage of investigation of the proposed development site and may be required in relation to the planning process, so that the local planning authority can formulate an appropriate response in the light of the impact upon any known or potential heritage assets, defined as parts of the historic environment considered significant because of their historic, evidential or aesthetic and/or communal interest. Site Assessment: The proposal site is with the London Borough of Enfield and is centred on NGR: TQ 35361 92244. It covers an area of approximately 520m2 and lies at an elevation of c. 11m AOD. The site is situated to the W of Advent Way, to the E of Meridian Way, and to the N of Angel Road (North Circular), and is currently occupied by modern single-storey commercial buildings, located within an industrial estate to the N of Angel Road, Edmonton. The site is accessed via Advent Way, and is surrounded on all sides by further commercial and industrial buildings. All areas of the site which are not occupied by buildings are covered with hard standing. The construction of the modern single-storey commercial buildings, the establishment of the hard standing, and the development of the industrial estate 20th century is likely to have impacted to some extent on any underlying archaeological deposits or foundations, particularly any evidence of medieval or post-medieval agricultural activity. Overall Conclusions: The archaeological potential of the site has been assessed, in overall terms, as Moderate to High, with particular reference to encountering features or deposits of a prehistoric date. The assessment of prehistoric archaeological potential is based on the location of the site within the Lea Valley West Bank APA, an area noted as being of relatively high potential for producing evidence of early prehistoric activity and paleoenvironmental material, as well as the presence of superficial alluvial deposits within the boundaries of the site. Evidence of prehistoric occupation from multiple periods is recorded within the wider designated study area surrounding the site of the proposed development on the Greater London HER. The archaeological potential of the site, in terms of archaeological features or deposits dating from the Romano-British, medieval, or post-medieval periods, has been assessed as Low. The Romano-British archaeological assessment reflects the lack of positively identified evidence for Romano-British activity recorded within the vicinity of the site or wider designated study area on the Greater London HER. The assessment of medieval archaeological potential reflects the location of the site within what is likely to have been agricultural land to the E of the settlement of Edmonton, and on the edge of the flood plain of the river Lea. This is supported by the location of the site on the earliest available cartographic sources, as well as the lack of positive evidence for medieval activity recorded in the vicinity of the site on the Greater London HER. The post-medieval archaeological assessment reflects the fact that the site remained undeveloped from the medieval period until the mid-20th century, initially as part of an agricultural landscape on the edge of the Lea floodplain, and then as part of an industrial estate. Industrial buildings were eventual built within the site boundaries in the 1960s. Based on the information recorded in nearby archaeological investigations, it is likely that natural gravels will be encountered at an approximate depth of around 0.
