In July 2009, ARCUS were commissioned by Cartwright Pickard Architects, on behalf of City Estates, to undertake an archaeological buildings appraisal on a site at 151 Arundel Street (SK 3552 8684) located within the Cultural Industries Quarter Conservation Area. The appraisal was required to inform a planning application for mixed-use redevelopment at the site. The appraisal comprised a site visit, with digital photography and sketch plans, as well as documentary and cartographic research. The site comprises three plots: one bounded by Arundel Street and Brown Lane, and two fronting Arundel Lane, presently delineated by a change in ground level. The only standing buildings are situated within the former plot. These include three ranges of the former Sellers Wheel. The remaining buildings are all Grade II listed and form part of a once medium sized integrated works which originally included grinding hulls, forges, a steam engine, workshops, offices and warehouse. The remaining structures are the principal northwest range, the northeast range and part of the southwest range. These housed offices and warehousing, grinding and workshops respectively. Those structures which formed the rear and south corner of the works have been demolished, along with those positioned at the southeast of the site, originally within the adjacent plot fronting Arundel Lane and Brown Lane. The standing buildings on the site retain a large amount of historical fabric which relate to the buildings former use as part of the Sellers Wheel cutlery works. This includes evidence of grinding trough with jack-arched ceiling, powered workshops with indications of former positioning of workbenches, little mesters workshops, high status offices with related features and warehouse spaces and possible early steam engine house within the ground floor of the northeast range. The land to the rear of buildings has been cleared. Evaluation and excavation at adjacent sites has indicated that there is a moderate to high potential for the survival of sub-surface remains. These are most likely to be related to late 18th-/early 19th- century back-to-back houses along Arundel Lane which were later converted to workshops. The remains could include basements, floor and yard surfaces, outbuildings privies and workshops. At the rear of the yard of 151 Arundel Street, the basement and associated features relating to a steam engine, depicted on the 1896 Goad plan, may survive below ground. The potential for medieval or earlier archaeology within the site is low. Although a high proportion of the original buildings have been demolished, reducing the integrity of the works, the remaining standing buildings are grade II listed, contain evidence of former usage and continue to preserve the character of the conservation area. Similar sites located within the area have undergone a programme of further archaeological recording prior to redevelopment.
