Résumé

récupéré en direct d'OpenAlex

A programme of Historic Building Recording was carried out to a Level 2 standard at the DB Cargo Shed (also known as DB Schenker Downside Carriage Shed) Granby Street, Euston, London NW1 3SA. The field survey for the DB Cargo Shed and the associated Accommodation Block was carried out in two phases by two members of the MHI built heritage team. The initial investigation was undertaken and was limited to the ground level, and the exterior of the carriage shed due to the presence of asbestos-containing material (ACM) on the first floor of the building. The remaining areas were surveyed after the majority of ACMs were cleared. The Historic Building Recording also included a survey of the parapet wall along Park Village East to assess any assets for retention. The programme of Historic Building Recording was undertaken in two phases. On both occasions, non-intrusive investigations were carried out including the survey and recording of the fabric of the Cargo Shed structure and its structural elements. A measured survey of the ground floor of the Accommodation Block was also undertaken to produce a plan. The survey consisted of a comprehensive photographic record of the building, including detailed and general shots of the interior and exterior fabric of the building. The site of the DB Cargo Shed is located approximately 500m to the north of Euston station and is bounded by railway tracks approaching Euston to its east and north, Granby Terrace to its south and Park Village East to its west. DB Cargo Shed, originally known as Euston Downside Carriage Shed, is thought to have been constructed in c 1905. The building is constructed of brick-built, load-bearing walls. The glazed saw-tooth roof is formed of steel trusses and supported by steel composite columns in the interior. The building is open to its roof internally except at its southern end where two-storey offices are located. The building was constructed as carriage maintenance shed by the London and North-Western Railway (LNWR) which in 1922 became the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMSR). After nationalisation of the railways in 1948 and the formation of British Rail, the building continued in use as a maintenance shed. It was taken over by English, Welsh and Scottish Railways (EWS) in 1996, which then later became DB Cargo Rail UK in 2009. The western end of the building is obscured from the adjacent road (Park Village East) by vegetation. The eastern and north elevations are adjacent to live railway tracks into Euston Station. The southern elevation is the most visible and is accessible from Granby Terrace. The Historic Building Recording also included a survey of the parapet wall along Park Village East to assess any assets for retention. Both the parapet and an associated dwarf wall were photographed, and the photographs have been manipulated in a 3d Photogrammetric software to produce a schematic drawing of the wall's west elevation. A number of structural elements were identified as heritage assets appropriate for possible or definite retention. Most notably, the column caps of the parapet wall were recommended for definite retention.
