The efficacy of technological innovations, market-based solutions, and individual behavioural changes in addressing the climate crisis is ultimately contingent upon a robust framework of political will and legally binding commitments at national and international levels. This paper argues that decisive political action, often catalysed by public pressure and informed by scientific consensus, is an indispensable driver of profound societal shifts towards sustainability. Drawing lessons from historical environmental successes, such as the international agreements addressing ozone depletion (Montreal Protocol) and acid rain, this chapter examines the mechanisms through which political resolve can unlock gigatonnes of CO2 reductions. It critiques the limitations of past and current international climate agreements, such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, particularly concerning enforcement and the binding nature of commitments for all major emitters. The paper advocates for the establishment of ambitious, science-based, and legally enforceable national emissions reduction targets, supported by comprehensive policy suites including innovative, multi-faceted carbon pricing mechanisms (such as the proposed "Balance Unit" encompassing climate, biodiversity, and socio-economic well-being), the elimination of fossil fuel subsidies—which represent a colossal misallocation of global resources—and substantial public and private investment in green infrastructure and research. Furthermore, it scrutinises the profound challenges posed by entrenched vested interests, lobbying, and the inertia of economic models predicated on unsustainable growth. It underscores the critical role of an engaged citizenry, amplified by cultural movements, indigenous wisdom, NGO advocacy, and transparent governance (potentially enhanced by technologies like DLT), in creating and maintaining the political environment necessary for transformative and obligatory climate action, thereby enabling the widespread adoption of the diverse "low-hanging fruit" solutions discussed throughout this volume.
