Résumé
In Part II of this volume, the four chapters discuss the patterns of glacial erosion, landform development, and glacial and marine sediments. Together these chapters constitute an important source of information on the nature of glacial erosion and the rate or amount of glacial erosion during the Cenozoic. Mapping the patterns of glacial erosion across Baffin Island and surrounding areas ( Chapter 3 ) indicates that glacial scouring is confined to the terrain below c. 350 m asl. The high upland surfaces are primarily unscoured although there is limited evidence for glaciation in the form of striations and ice-molded landforms. Within these high uplands, fiords and valleys penetrate inland--these have been sites of active glacial erosion, although how much of the typical fiord from is associated with glacial erosion and how much is a result of structural style? The LANDSAT mapping of glacial landforms indicates that the major areas of erosion in the eastern Canadian Arctic occur in the lowlands where the ice would be thickest and basal temperatures probably reached the pressure melting point. Bedrock erosion from these areas would have led to the production of glacial sediment, however, the amount of glacial sediment within the areas of scour is sparse. The lightly scoured uplands intervene along the glacial flow paths that link the areas of heavy scouring with the fiords and waters of the east coast. Interpretation of the landforms, and glaciological modelling suggest that the ice was cold-based at elevations greater than 350 m, hence glacial sediment from the lowlands to the west would have to be transported englacially prior to their release by bottom or surface melting in the fiords. The isochrones of reconstructed ice sheets indicate that the rate of sediment transport would be slow.
