Sustaining Ethnicity, Expanding the Community, and Engaging Evangelicalism: Dutch-Americans in the Christian Reformed Church in North America, 1945-1995
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Following the Second World War and through the end of the twentieth century, the Christian Reformed Church in North America experienced massive changes, beginning with unified institutional growth and a wave of new migration and ending with an internal struggle over the cultural changes occurring in North American culture. Rooted in Dutch migration, ethnicity, and Reformed theology, the denomination provides examples of how an established ethnic community adapted to new migrants, Christian youth adopted the cultural changes of the 1960s era, and a confessional religious community interacted with the rise of conservative white evangelicalism. Part religious history and part ethnic history, this study attempts to merge the two historiographies to demonstrate how a community rooted in both religious faith and ethnic identity navigated the cultural and political landscape of the late twentieth century. Due to the binational character of the Christian Reformed Church, transcending the American/Canadian border, and the transnational nature of Dutch Reformed denominations during this period, this study engages with these changes outside of a strictly U.S. context. Ultimately, I explore the development and meaning of community across time. Both the leaders and members of the Christian Reformed Church belonged to a specific community, one which plotted the direction of their lives and shaped their understanding of their local communities, their nation, and the broader world. I hope the reader will gain a sense of the world they created and developed and how it changed in relation to wider cultural transformations.
