Solving a Salty Situation: The Phytoremediation of Road Salt Using Halophytes and Their Associated Bacterial Communities
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Road salt contamination is a growing environmental issue in Canada, where chloride runoff from winter road maintenance threatens freshwater ecosystems and soil health. This thesis investigates the use of native halophyte grasses for the phytoremediation of salt-affected roadside soils, explores sustainable strategies for managing salt-laden biomass, and examines the rhizospheric microbial communities associated with halophytes under realistic anthropogenic salinity conditions. A three-year field study in southern Ontario demonstrated that Sporobolus michauxianus and Panicum virgatum were particularly effective at establishing in roadside soils and removing chloride, extracting 24% and 16% of the initial soil chloride content, respectively. The results support the potential of halophytes to mitigate salt runoff before it reaches aquatic ecosystems. To address the challenge of managing harvested halophyte biomass, leaching trials were conducted using plant material processed with a Vitamix FoodCycler® Eco 5™. Both passive and active leaching methods successfully extracted chloride, with low effort drip leaching removing up to 70% of chloride and high effort saturation leaching achieving complete removal at smaller water volumes. These findings support the feasibility of recovering salt from halophyte biomass for potential reuse, contributing to a more circular and sustainable road salt management system. Finally, growth chamber experiments revealed that soil type and plant species identity were the dominant factors shaping the rhizospheric bacterial communities of these halophytes, while the imposed salinity levels had a more subtle influence. Several plant-growth promoting genera, including Sphingomonas, Nocardioides, and Pseudomonas, were consistently identified while halophilic bacteria were absent, suggesting that microbiome-informed salt remediation strategies may not require halophilic bacteria, but can rather focus on strains with beneficial traits and successful in situ colonization. Together, these studies demonstrate the ecological and practical value of integrating halophytes into roadside management practices and provide a foundation for scalable, low-cost, and biodiversity-enhancing approaches to managing anthropogenic salt contamination in Canada.
