What if the most powerful lessons in reconciliation and reciprocity happen on a soccer field rather than in a traditional classroom ? This narrative inquiry explores the experiences of two University of Saskatchewan elite women soccer players, and Mckenna as they engaged with youth during wellness programming in Montreal Lake Cree Nation, a Northern Indigenous community in Saskatchewan. This paper draws on Dewey’s theory of experience, Addams’ theory of social ethics, and Adiche’s concept of single stories. Through field texts and one-on-one conversations, two narrative accounts were co-composed with participants. Looking across the two narrative accounts and Mckenna’s autobiographical narrative, we identify “startling moments”, moments of relational recognition, that challenged participants’ single stories of Indigenous youth. These startling moments opened possibilities for undoing and retelling their single stories of who they were and were becoming. Building on the work of Blix et al. we show how recognizing themselves in the youth shifted their single stories and allowed the co-composition of spaces where reciprocity could live in their interactions. The research highlights how relational, embodied experiences through sport fostered what we term recognition and a spirit of reciprocity. These findings offer a deeper understanding of how shared experiences can shift narratives and open new ways of living alongside one another in narrative inquiry and community engagement.
