Résumé

récupéré en direct d'OpenAlex

The ongoing restoration of Canada's Parliament Building, a prominent heritage building, includes the implementation of seismic isolation to enhance its seismic resilience. With its 6-story Centre Block featuring stone and brick walls, steel columns, and unreinforced concrete foundations, as well as the vulnerable 92 m tall Peace Tower supported by unreinforced concrete piers, addressing seismic risk is crucial. Approximately 580 isolators, including elastomeric bearings and flat sliding bearings, are utilized in the seismic isolation system to achieve cost-effective retrofitting while preserving the building's heritage characteristics. When complete, it will be one of the largest seismically-isolated heritage buildings in North America. A comprehensive three-dimensional analytical model was utilized to conduct detailed nonlinear time history analyses, accurately capturing significant mass and stiffness irregularities within the structure. Two sets of 11 ground motion records were carefully selected—one scaled for the short-period range of the design response spectrum, representing nearby earthquakes of smaller magnitude, and the other for the long-period range, representing larger magnitude distant earthquakes. A site-specific vertical target response spectrum was developed, and scaling factors for the vertical ground motion component were determined independently to ensure compatibility with the vertical spectrum. This paper focuses on investigating the impact of the vertical component of ground motions on the shear demands of the superstructure walls and piers within the isolated structure. Notably, the results reveal a significant increase in shear demands for the superstructure walls due to the vertical component of short-period ground motions, which may not be effectively attenuated by the isolation system. These additional induced shear demands primarily occur within the frequency range associated with the vertical vibration frequency of individual floors and the global vertical mode linked to the overall vertical stiffness of the isolation system. A comparison of shear demands with and without the vertical component highlights the importance of considering it in the analysis, assessment, and design of seismically-isolated heritage structures. Despite the increased shear demands, the seismic isolation system effectively reduces induced base shear in the walls compared to conventional retrofit methods for fixed base structures.
