THE LIFE PATH, ART-HISTORICAL, AND ETHNOLOGICAL LEGACY OF ROMAN HARASYMCHUK (1900–1976): A HISTORIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW

For the first time, this article provides a comprehensive analysis of the historiography concerning the life path and scholarly legacy of the ethnologist and art historian Roman Harasymchuk (1900–1976) from the 1990s to the early 2020s. Such an analysis is essential because without it, it is difficult to envision both further specialized research on this prominent figure of Ukrainian scholarship and the use of his extensive factual and theoretical material in contemporary academic works, primarily in the field of researching Ukrainian folk dances. The aim of the study is to determine a comprehensive analysis of specialized academic articles, monographs, and encyclopedic publications where information about the figure of R. Harasymchuk is presented, including his scholarly legacy or materials about him that are integrated into a broader academic scope. In forming the research task and based on the conducted analysis of academic publications, the author identifies specific stages in the study of the scholar’s biography and academic contribution in the fields of ethnology and art studies. The article also examines the factors that encouraged the growing interest in this remarkable personality among contemporary Ukrainian scholars of various profiles while analyzing the state of research into particular stages of Harasymchuk’s life and his various scholarly interests. The research methodology is based on the principles of objectivity, comprehensiveness, and historicism during the analysis of publications, the clarification of certain factors, and the identification of specific trends. Furthermore, the study utilizes the comparative-typological method and the method of component analysis to determine further prospects and specific tasks in studying the scholar’s biography and academic heritage. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that it identifies three key stages for the return of the scholar’s name and his legacy to modern Ukrainian academia and clarifies the factors that determined the possibility of such development. It is shown that the most detailed characteristics of his biography appear in the articles by Kh. Makovetska, R. Kyrchiv, and S. Pavlyuk. Despite the wide range of the scholar’s interests, the central place in his studies is given to folk dances, and accordingly, the attention of contemporary researchers is focused primarily on this aspect of his legacy. Among the works where Harasymchuk’s materials on folk dances are used as a valuable source for comparative studies, the monograph by A. Nahachewsky on the social dances of Ukrainians in Canada and the works by N. Marusyk are specifically highlighted. The author demonstrates that the comprehensive use of R. Harasymchuk’s scholarly legacy in modern studies is impossible without a thorough investigation of his life path. Based on a detailed description of the historiography, the article outlines the primary tasks for studying his life and legacy, which ultimately involve the preparation of a comprehensive monographic study.
