Anne Lister the embodied organist: new insights into our understanding of an embodied organist and the ecomusicology of the pipe organ in the 1800s in the north of England.

2022 saw the premiere of Anne Listers Organ Sonata at Halifax Minster. Whilst this was a spectacular event showcasing the Organ at Halifax Minster it holds great significance, as we know Anne herself played it for services. Audiences had the rare opportunity to be able to hear exactly what Anne heard when she played the Organ at Halifax. The project uncovered a new area of research in the field of Organology. This new research covers two areas, the embodied organist and ecomusicology with the pipe organ at Halifax Minster. This paper, and later published article, will use the following three elements to establish, quantify and define the new areas of insight within the field of Organology. The first element is a critical analysis of Anne’s diary entries pertaining to the pipe organ, the second is the organ itself at Halifax Minster as an ecomusicological instrument and the third is a critical analysis of the impact of ‘rehearing’ Anne through the Organ Sonata. This paper will utilize the methodology of practice based research with musicology and ecomusicology specifically using the methods of; literature review on embodied performance, the pipe organ and ecomusicology, the practice of rehearing and active listening in relation to the pipe organ in the 1800s, and contemporary organists descriptions of sound of the same era, with particular interest given to those in the North of England. Also, three comparative case studies will be completed: 1. Anne Lister’s Diary entries, in particular excerpts such as: "The trumpet stop wonderfully fine, worth coming to here to hear the Organ" “13th August 1831 St Bavo's Church Haarlem, the Netherlands, Anne Listening to Mariana playing the Organ. "Mariana played the Organ 55minutes, very fine, God save the King". "Pretty church, organ invisible" "In the meanwhile, got the organists to play (lamely) the coronation anthem". 2. The soundscape of Halifax Minster in the 21st Century in light of ecomusicology practices and the 2022 audience ‘rehearing Anne’. 3. The embodied performer, Anne Listers Organ Sonata, a critical analysis as reflective practice. The literature review, practice as research and case studies will quantify the initial findings that lead to the creation of the Organ Sonata to then establish, quantify and define a new methodology for understanding and approaching embodiment and ecomusicology in the field of Organology. This research and paper will also result in a digital release on cassette by SetFootPress of ecological field recordings from Halifax Minster.
