Résumé
Title: Petroleum as Compressed Time: The Temporal Distortion of Civilisation Authors: Kriger, Boris Affiliations: Information Physics Institute, Gosport, Hampshire, United Kingdom Institute of Integrative and Interdisciplinary Research, Toronto, Canada Description: This paper develops a conceptual and semi-formal framework analysing petroleum not as an energy resource but as a mechanism of temporal compression. The temporal compression ratio τ = T_acc / T_ext ≈ 10⁶ quantifies the mismatch between geological accumulation (~300 million years) and industrial extraction (~200 years). Nuclear fission extends the framework to stellar timescales (τ ≈ 10¹⁰). Drawing on viability theory, the biosphere and civilisation are modelled as coupled systems sharing a joint viability set; a minimal 2D worked example demonstrates that current extraction rates exceed the critical threshold for remaining within viability constraints. The framework generates structural hypotheses about the relationship between temporal compression and rapid growth, between energy density and governance centralisation (with a proposed operationalisation using Polity V / V-Dem indices and weighted energy-mix densities), and about the carbon-accelerated phase as a common civilisational developmental stage. New sections analyse the geopolitical price of compressed time — the resource curse as temporal pathology, neo-extractivism as entropy externalisation, and the human costs of the double extraction from geological reserves and contemporary communities. The entropic terminus of consumer economies is examined, where archived energy accumulated over geological time is converted into single-use products with functional lifespans measured in minutes — with thermodynamic observations separated from normative judgments. The paper addresses virtualisation and the control-loop mismatch (introducing the decision-response ratio δ as an informational analogue to τ), solar energy as resynchronisation, orbital infrastructure, CO₂ fertilisation and biospheric absorption rates, the biotic–abiotic debate, and astrobiological implications including a temporal compression filter for the Drake equation. The central thesis: petroleum is a mechanism of acceleration that displaced human systems beyond sustainable synchronisation with the biosphere; the post-carbon transition is fundamentally a problem of resynchronisation across multiple coupled timescales.
