PDMS Microchannels for Silicon Chip Cooling
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Microfluidic chips can be embedded with the integrated circuits to cool them and maintain the operating temperature of the silicon chip. The proposed system is a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based microfluidic channel designed to cool the silicon chip containing a nichrome heater. By fabricating microfluidic channels on the backside of the wafer, efficient thermal management is achieved, enhancing the performance and longevity of electronic devices. At continuous heating of the IC at 700 C, the drop in IC temperature attained after passing 200 C and 100 C cool water is sensed to be 5.90 C to 7.50 C and 4.80 C to 6.50 C within a time range of 9.45 min to 15.14 min and 4.8 min to 6.5 min for flowrates ranging from <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$60 \mu ~\mathrm{L} / \min$</tex> to <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$140 \mu ~\mathrm{L} / \min$</tex>. On the other hand, for the same flowrates, when the IC is turned off after reaching a heat of 700 C, the time taken by the IC to cool to room temperature by passing pressurized air and water at room temperature and 100C cool were observed to be <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{1 0. 5 8 ~ m i n}$</tex> to <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{2 4. 5 3 ~ m i n} \boldsymbol{,} \mathbf{1 0. 4 5 ~ m i n}$</tex> to 25.07 min and 10.11 min to 19.54 min. The experimental results showcase the potential of PDMS microfluidic channels as a compact alternative to traditional cooling methods
