Relevance of the topic: Spina bifida (SB) is a congenital hernia of the spinal cord when defected vertebrae archs do not protect spinal cord. Depending on the localization of the lesion, this disease causes different disabilities: affected cardiovascular system response, lower limb paralysis, soft tissue plasticity disorders, sphincter control disorders, neuro-muscle control. According to the Human Genetics Center 2003 data provided by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania - nerve tube pathology accounts for 7.5% of all congenital pathologies. Because of the correct and timely treatment on the present days, 97% of children with the sacrum area defect, 93% in the lumbar region and 75% in the thoracic area, survive with this disease. Physiotherapy, as one of the most important areas of rehabilitation treatment, still requires more specific scientific analysis and practical solutions with the effectiveness of a wide range of methodologies. The object of the study– impact of different physiotherapy methods for a child with spina bifida. Aim of the study – to evaluate the impact of different physiotherapy techniques for a child with Spina bifida. Tasks of the study: 1. To determine the effect of classical physiotherapy on the patient with spina bifida; 2. To determine the effect of physiotherapy with Mollii suit on a patient with spina bifida; 3. Compare the effects of classic physiotherapy and physiotherapy with Mollii suit on the patient with spina bifida. In the first part of the thesis is described the aetiology, classification, symptoms and treatment methods of Spina bifida and the rehabilitation methods to be used. The second part examines the effects of different physiotherapy methods on the child with Spina bifida. Characteristics of the study: In order to investigate the impact of different physiotherapy methods on a child with Spina bifida, an empirical study was made to combine qualitative and quantitative research methods: questionnaire analysis, goniometry, evaluation of muscle strength using Lovett scale, evaluation of upper extremities using Abilhand test, gross motor function measurement with GMFM scale, functional independence test and McGill static muscle strength test. The results of the study provide summarized conclusions: physiotherapy procedures with electrostimulation suit Mollii were more effective than classical physiotherapy procedures. Keywords: spina bifida, electrical stimulation, physical therapy.
