Résumé
Brigita Stackevičiūtė. The impact of physiotherapy in treating idiopathic scoliosis in children. Final work of a physiotherapy study programme student. Guide: asistant physiotherapist Andrius Maškarinec, Utena college, Medical faculty, Health care and rehabilitation department. Utena, 2017. SUMMARY Theme Relevance. The number of children who are suffering from idiopathic scoliosis is rising, and the age of diagnosis is increasingly younger in Lithuania. According to the Hygiene Institute of the Health Information Centre (2014) the number of scoliosis cases is increasing every year. The number of children diagnosed with scoliosis has risen by 10 per cent. Society is paying much more attention to the health of young people, and therefore there are more effective physiotherapeutic treatments prescribed to the correction of idiopathic scoliosis. Object of the research: The impact of physiotherapy in treating idiopathic scoliosis in children. Aim of dissertation: To evaluate the effect of physiotherapy in treating idiopathic scoliosis in children. The first part of the dissertation investigates the spinal anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, the causes of idiopathic scoliosis, classification and physiotherapeutic treatment of idiopathic scoliosis. In the second part of the dissertation the characteristics of the investigation are presented; the contingent of those treated, as well as the investigation methods applied during treatment: W.W.Hoeger’s test, Adams’ test, and Stainė’s abdominal muscle endurance test according to McGill’s “Flaming”. In the third part the analysis of the investigation’s results is presented with the aim of backing up the effect of physiotherapy on patients with idiopathic scoliosis. Characteristics of the investigation. The investigation was carried out between the months of March to May 2017, in PI Ukmergė hospital’s rehabilitation ward. In aiming to evaluate the effect of physiotherapy in treating children’s idiopathic scoliosis, an empirical investigation was carried out combining qualitative research methods: targeted respondent selection, supervision and document analysis. The results of the investigation allow for the following main conclusions to be made: the effect of physiotherapy on the selected patients suffering from idiopathic scoliosis, after the prescribed course of physiotherapeutic treatment, changed. This is shown by the physiotherapeutic examination: the results of all patients had improved. Practical significance of the dissertation’s results and the application possibilities show that the results acquired during the course of the investigation allow recommendations to be made for the patients and for improvement of physiotherapeutic competency. Key words: physiotherapy, idiopathic scoliosis, children.
